Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative talents in her early years due to her aunt Denise. DuVernay worked as a night nurse to allow her mother the time she needed during the day for the love of literature, art as well as theatre. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's example how art could serve as an instrument for activism. DuVernay's mother also had social consciousness and taught DuVernay to express herself via artwork. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has been for generations. Her father was a witness to the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, would later inspire her to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded degrees in English as well as African American Studies. As a student DuVernay began to consider producing for broadcast journalism. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to examine the garbage from a home belonging to a jury member. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied with journalism so she made the decision to go into the industry of public relations. DuVernay was offered a job straight out college, as a new publicist at a studio. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
